Hester Bateman Silver Marrow Scoop Dated 1785 London Assay
Antique silver marrow scoops were used to tease out the tasty morsels of marrowfat from beef bones - a great delicacy during Georgian times. They are generally table spoon-sized with two scoops of differing widths.
This fine example is made by the celebrated female silversmith Hester Bateman who was renowned for making good quality and stylish silverware towards the end of the eighteenth century.
The hallmarks have an additional hallmark which is a George 111 Head in an incuse shield which was the duty mark for the first two years that duty was introduced on manufactured silver.
Thereafter the duty mark was in a oval shield with each different monarchs head until 1890.
